Our client, an exciting & innovative Irish Tech start-up specialising in energy efficient water and wastewater solutions, are seeking to hire an experienced Applications Engineer to join their growing team in Galway.

The Applications Engineer will be responsible for market research and data gathering, understanding customer and partner networks internationally, building relationships with customers and partners to understand their technical and commercial challenges and present solutions to the solve these challenges.

The application engineer will work closely as part of a wider team including product development engineers, project/process design engineers, CFD engineers and project managers to gather  necessary data required to  develop  commercial  proposals  and presentations during all stages of the business development process and pre-sales cycle.

Key Job Requirements

  • Research and Data Collection: Responsible for carrying out relevant research on the water/wastewater markets and customer/partner ecosystems globally. Understanding market technology trends and global water and wastewater challenges.
  • Understanding the Customer Problem:  Demonstrates an ability to meet with and understand customer/end-user problems and pain points. Customers range from executives and facilities managers to consulting engineers and field operators in both municipal and industrial facilities.
  • Writing and Presentation Ability:  The successful candidate will  need to demonstrate an excellent  technical  and commercial  writing  ability  for  technology  white  papers,  commercial proposals, tenders, and grant applications. The successful candidate will also demonstrate good vision and showcase an ability to use imagery to assist in communicating both problems and solutions to clients.
  • Tender Understanding, Proposal and Bid Preparation: Have an ability to collect and understand tenders and prepare proposals/bids to meet accordingly.
  • Designer Coordination: The application engineer will demonstrate excellent teamwork skills, an ability to work comfortably within a wider team to complete deliverables on schedule, and have a knowledge of construction / installation projects in the water or wastewater industries.
  • Commercial Engineering: The successful candidate should have a good understanding of material and equipment costing, pricing and margin.
  • Site Visits and Travel to Meet Customers: Depending on business development and customer research needs, the candidate will be expected  to arrange and attend visit sites and be able to communicate with facilities managers and field operators regarding site performance and collect necessary data required for proposal development. Site visits may involve activities such as site reconnaissance, surveys, etc. Therefore, an ability to drive and a full drivers licence is required. It is expected that international travel would be required from time to time to meet with clients in regions such as Australia and the US and in emerging markets.
  • Internal Reporting and Communication: A successful candidate will be able to work to achieve targets assigned by the Executive Management  Team  and communicate  effectively to the Executive Management Team.
  • Working Environment: The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of an interdisciplinary team and will be able to perform efficiently in a high-pressure environment while demonstrating excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Interpersonal Requirements: Strong planning and decision-making skills. Ability to meet performance requirements. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Must be independent, flexible, responsive and creative in respect to finding solutions to project problems.

Key Requirements

Education Preferences

  • Undergraduate degree in an engineering field of study.
  • Preferred 5 years of related experience and/or training.
  • Preferred  understanding  of  water  and/or  wastewater  treatment  facilities  and processes.


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Fluent written and spoken English. Ability to confidently participate in public speaking engagements such as client presentations, conferences and tradeshows.
  • Strong  organizational  and  analytical  skills.  Ability  to  provide  efficient,  timely, dependable, and courteous service to customers.
  • Ability to author technical reports and correspondence. Ability to be responsive to customers, partners and internal colleagues.
  • Ability to effectively present information to an internal department and/or groups of employees.
  • Strong level of computer literacy and knowledge of key packages. – MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project, AutoCAD.

Knowledge and Experience

  • The  successful  candidate  will  have  accumulated  design,  analysis,  sales  or application engineering experience preferably in the disciplines of civil or mechanical engineering particularly related to water and wastewater treatment infrastructure, design or build or in the general construction industry.
  • Ability to solve advanced technical problems and deal with a variety of options in complex situations. Requires analytical and quantitative skills with proven experience in developing solutions to problems. Draws upon the analysis of others and makes recommendations that have a direct impact on the company and projects.
  • Experience of and has capability to read, understand, analyze, and comment on standard documents affecting equipment design and installation, including but not limited to agreements, project charters, surveys, schematics, drawings, and specs. Familiarity with mechanical equipment specifications.
